Registering with a GP
Registering with a GP

To register with a GP (General Practitioner / family doctor) in Vilnius, a resident must choose a primary health care centre (poliklinika or private clinic) and formally register with a family doctor there.

Select a public or private primary health care institution that provides family doctor services.

Common options in Vilnius:

Public clinics are usually free if the person is covered by Lithuanian Compulsory Health Insurance (PSD).

Registration can be done in two ways:

  • In person at the clinic reception.

The clinic will ask for:

  • Passport or ID card

  • Lithuanian personal code (asmens kodas) if available

  • Residence permit (for foreigners)

  • Contact details

The clinic will provide a list of available family doctors (šeimos gydytojai). The patient selects one and signs a registration form.

After registration:

  • The selected GP becomes the primary contact for medical care.

  • The GP provides referrals to specialists if needed.

  • Appointments can be booked through the clinic system or eSveikata.

Additional notes for foreigners

  • Registration is typically possible if the person lives in Lithuania and has PSD insurance (through work, studies, or voluntary contributions).

  • Without PSD, services can still be accessed privately for a fee.

Typical process time

Registration usually takes 10–15 minutes at the clinic reception.
